Turning It Off for Even One Minute

IMG_2901I read it about, hear about it and wonder about it….Meditation. I know it is something that is good for you. But, I am just not sure…..Even though people rave about how it has changed their lives. I am still hesitant. Maybe it is the image of chanting or my inability to stop thinking, or maybe it’s because I just don’t know where to start. How about you?
Just the other day, I read an article about mediation and thought, well, this doesn’t sound so bad. Maybe this is something I could try. Here are the “cliff notes”:

Mediation is about taking a few minutes out of your day to relax and turn your brain off. It has many benefits from reducing stress, relieving back pain and helping you think more clearly.
Meditation can be done many different ways – you just need to find a method that works for you.
In general, mediation involves 3 basic things:

1. Have a straight spine. It might be easier to use a chair when you first start so that your back is supported. You don’t have to sit cross-legged on the floor.
2. Relax your breathing. Breathe in and out through your nose.
3. Have a single focus. Focus on anything that makes you happy. Think of something that grounds you. Becoming distracted is normal. Just acknowledge it and then go back to your focus.

When you first start. Start small. Maybe just one minute, then build as you go. Experiment with the location and time of day. Find what works for you.
And, If you are looking for some guidance – there’s an app for that. J Some suggestions: Headspace, Relax Melodies, and Buddhify.
So put aside your judgement and preconceived notions and maybe give it a try. I think I will.
