Take a multi-vitamin, don’t take multi- vitamin. One week it is encouraged, the next you are told not to waste your money. Both answers have merit, so what is the right answer?
The answer is unique for each individual. A multi-vitamin by its name is just that – multiple vitamins. If we break it down into individual units, the decision is a little easier to make.
In our northern climate and with our general eating habits, there are a few nutrients we tend to be deficient in.
Vitamin D – Vitamin D deficiency has reached pandemic proportions according to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Vitamin D has been shown to help keep bones and muscles healthy and supports your immune system.
Magnesium – Magnesium is another nutrient we don’t get enough of according to some research. That deficiency may play a part in many issues like metabolic syndrome and various inflammation related disorders.
Iron, B12, calcium, folate — a few more that we tend to lack that we need for optimal health.
There are other factors to consider as well that could put you as risk for nutrient deficiencies. For example, a calorie reduced diet for weight loss, a restricted diet like vegan or vegetarian, illness, or participating in an intense workout program.
The thing is, eating a well-rounded diet is your best option and the healthiest choice for getting your nutrients. But, most of us don’t eat that way day in and day out. Most of us hav
