In case you need another reason to get your workout in regularly — I have oneš . Get this: a recent study suggests that regular exercise may prevent acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) which is the leading cause of death with COVID19 or the seasonal flu.
According to a study conducted by the University of Virginia, when we exercise, our bodies release an antioxidant (extracellular superoxide dismutase or EcSOD) throughout our body which has been shown to boost our immunity. The study says that EcSOD ācan be redistributed to lung tissue, (and) could be a viable preventative/therapeutic measure in reducing the severity of ARDSā.
It makes sense really. Many studies show that exercise can boost your immune system before, during, and after being sick. Exercise gets your blood circulating faster which means your white blood cells are circulating faster too. White blood cells fight infections. And with release of EcSOD, we have another tool in our arsenal to combat illness.
You donāt need to kill yourself or workout for long crazy periods of time to reap the benefits. Just move at a pace that increases your heart rate for 30 minutes 5 times a week. Take a walk, go for a run, kayak, put on some music and dance, join the gym, purchase an at-home workout program, boxā¦.whatever you enjoy.
