It’s not about a Diet

photoEating healthy is not about a particular diet. It is not about denial. It is about focusing on what we can have.

The word diet for so many of us means not eating carbs, fats, protein, or sugar….whatever — you fill in the blank. Traditionally, the word “diet” also mean there is an end date. More times than not, once off the diet, the old eating habits come back and so do the pounds.

I don’t know about you, but whenever I’ve gone on a “diet”, all I can think about is food. Not a lot of fun. And you know what, it didn’t work. However, when you change about how you think about food, your “diet”  will change.

Your “diet” becomes your lifestyle. It is about choices. Consider this: Instead of thinking about what you can’t eat, think about the good foods you can eat.

It could go like this: I can have this juicy apple for a snack today. I can have a large veggie filled salad for lunch. I can have an herb crusted salmon filet at dinner. It is a philosophy of abundancy rather than scarcity.

When you choose whole foods – foods that were either grown in the ground or had a mother — you can even eat more! My co-workers tease me about how big of salad I have for lunch everyday. Frankly, I think they’re jealous. It takes them 10 minutes to eat their “diet” sized lasagna out of a box. Then, they sit and watch me eat my salad for another 20 minutes with this look of envy on their faces.

When you eat healthy, clean foods, you will be amazed at how much food you get to eat and you know what, you never leave the table hungry.
