It’s Blueberry Season

Earlier this week, we were in Northern Minnesota – the perfect time of year for blueberry picking. And pick we did!  As a matter of fact, we probably over picked. What do you think? Is 25 pounds too much?

Needless to say, we have plenty of blueberries in our house. We will eat some of them fresh, make some homemade jam, a pie and muffins. But the majority of them will be frozen to enjoy during our cold Minnesota winter.

Besides tasting good, did you know that blueberries are tiny health bombs? Ounce for ounce, they are one of the best fruits we can eat. Blueberries are loaded with vitamins, minerals and micronutrients that positively impact our health.

  • Blueberries are packed with antioxidants which helps keep free radicals in check and fights inflammation. Antioxidants are heart healthy and have been proven to help prevent diseases such as diabetes, inflammatory illnesses and even cancer.
  • Blueberries are loaded with fiber, including insoluble fiber, which slows the rate food moves through your digestive tract and in turn diminishes hunger.
  • Blueberries are good for your skin. Ellagic acid found in berries can help reduce wrinkles and skin damage from free radicals and may even block the production of enzymes that break down collagen. And that means, we look younger!
  • Blueberries give us brain power. Because blueberries contain such a high amount of phenols, particularly gallic acid, blueberries are known as “neuro-protective agents.” So, they literally protect our brains from degeneration, neurotoxicity and oxidative stress.
  • Blueberries can aid in weight loss. Naturally low in calories, low on the glycemic index and high in fiber, they make a perfect weight loss food.

The best way to eat blueberries and reap all these benefits is in their fresh natural form! Of course, frozen isn’t bad either!
