Whatever You Do…Don’t Become a Statistic

Whether you have a complete detailed list of goals for 2021 or you have just a general intention to be a healthier version of you, the struggle to stay on track is real.

Statistics show that 70% of the population will give up on their health resolution by the end of January. You don’t need to be part of that statistic. With some determination and these tips, you can beat the odds.

  1. Write your goals down and say them out loud every day. When you continuously tell yourself your goals, you are more likely to achieve them.
  2. Focus on one thing at a time.  I talked about this in other emails. When we try to make too many changes at once, we get overwhelmed, fall off, and then give up — only to feel like a failure (again). Instead, pick one new idea to change. Stick to it for a couple weeks or a month before introducing something new.
  3. Expect challenges and set backs. We all have days that we give into a treat or sleeping in instead of working out. Give yourself some grace when you “mess up”. Let it go, forgive yourself, and get back to it. A minor slip-up doesn’t need to turn into a major setback. You can get yourself back on track.
  4. Mix things up. If you are doing the same workout every day or eating the same foods, it gets boring and easy to quit. Try new recipes. Sprinkle in a yoga class, or try a new workout program. Variety will keep you interested and even better, you are less likely to plateau.
  5. Celebrate your wins, even the smallest ones. You don’t have to complete a marathon, reach your goal weight, or do an unassisted pull-up to celebrate. Take time to recognize the smaller successes like consistently getting your workouts in, sticking to your nutrition plan, or finding time to mediate each day.

Remember, a healthier lifestyle is just that…a lifestyle. It took time to develop your not so healthy habits and it take time to create new ones that stick. You got this!
