Over time, we tend to pick up some not so good eating habits. And, those habits are hard to break. They just kind of sneak up on us. The good news is you can stop those bad habits and create some new ones with just a few simple steps.
1. Keep frozen veggies in the house so they are readily available. Toss some on your pizza or in your omelet.
2. Go grocery shopping Friday afternoon so you have food in the house. You are less likely to eat out and if you shopped right, you will have some healthier foods to choose from.
3. Divide your plate into the following portions: ½ veggies, ¼ lean protein, and ¼ whole grain starch.
4. Eat the vegetables on your plate first. The fiber in the vegetables will help fill you up so you don’t overdue it on carbs and protein.
5. Eat your snacks and chips from a plate or bowl rather than right from the bag or original container. By dishing up your snack, you can control our portion size.
6. Sweeten your coffee with unsweetened almond milk and stevia. This option still sweetens your coffee, but it cuts down on the sugar levels.
7. Stop multitasking when you are eating. Turn off the TV, put down the phone and enjoy your meal.
8. When you have a choice, choose whole foods or foods you made yourself over processed foods. Whole and homemade foods are a better nutritional choice and they are not packed full of sodium and preservatives.
9. When ordering a salad, always ask for the dressing on the side. Generally, restaurants drown salads with dressing. By ordering them on the size, you have control.
10. Try swapping out ingredients for a healthier option. We substitute Greek yogurt for sour cream. How about substituting zucchini ribbons
for pasta? It is actually really good!
11. Always carry a water bottle with you. Staying hydrated is an important part of your overall health and you tend to eat less when hydrated.
12. Write down everything you eat for a week. See if there are any patterns emerging. If you goal is to eat healthier, keeping track will help you find ways to swap in better food choices.
